The Aqiqah… a way of thanking God for the blessing of a newborn
The ‘aqiqah is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a sacrifice offered as an expression of gratitude to God for the blessing of a newborn, and it is recommended to perform it on the seventh day after birth. It revives a Sunnah and brings joy that extends to the poor when they receive their share of the meat.
It is an act of devotion that combines gratitude for blessings, feeding the needy, and reviving the Sunnah of the beloved Prophet ﷺ — so you will receive the reward of the Aqiqah and the reward of charity.
It is permissible to perform it after the seventh day whenever it is convenient, and there is no harm in that.
A male child receives two shares… and a female child receives one share.
Following the Sunnah, we sacrifice two sheep for a male and one sheep for a female. The reward is great in both cases, and the choice is yours.
